Basic Principles

Wire EDM (Wire Electrical Discharge Machining, also known as wire erosion) is a cutting process that uses a thin brass wire connected to the equipment to perform machining based on the principle of electrical erosion. The wire is wound on a spool and guided from there through deflection rollers and brake rollers to the upper wire guide. Two opposing drive rollers pull the wire through the workpiece and the lower wire guide with a wire tension ranging from 5 to 25 Newtons and speeds of up to 25 meters per minute, thereby performing operations on the die workpiece.

The EDM Drilling Machine

The EDM drilling machine, also known as the EDM hole drilling machine, small hole EDM machine, or fine hole EDM machine, operates on the principle of using a continuously vertically moving thin brass tube (called the electrode tube) as the electrode to perform pulse spark discharge on the workpiece, eroding the metal to form the desired shape. Unlike wire EDM machines or die-sinking EDM machines, its electrical pulses are delivered through a hollow brass rod, with dielectric fluid passing through the fine hole in the middle of the brass rod to serve as cooling and chip removal.
